Helena moved to Australia from Portugal in 2008 and joined our team of nurses shortly after spending some time travelling around Australia. Her qualifications in the animal industry are extensive, having obtained a Degree in Zootechnical Engineering at the University of Evora in Portugal. Helena has had 5 years experience as an animal production technician in a farm with 4000 pigs in Portugal.

Her duties included medicating sick animals and supervising their recovery, vaccinations, blood collection, performing ultrasounds, animal breeding programs and laboratory work in the field of artificial insemination. Helena was also in charge of maintaining good hygiene practices. Through her dedication and diligence as an animal technician, Helena was able to increase the animal productivity by 15%, increased female pig’s fertility from 70 to 90%; reduce piglet mortality at birth by 10% and increase the number of piglets per sow. Her role also included participation in seminars about livestock, medicine, reproduction and nutrition, as well as training in the quality control and hygiene maintenance fields.
Helena came to Australia seeking new challenges. Working at Gordon Veterinary Hospital has allowed her to expand her skills and practice in the area of small animal nursing. She has been inspired by the Australian bush and our native animals. Her uplifting and enthusiastic personality combined with her extensive technical training is a brilliant addition to our team of well-qualified vet nurses.
In her spare time, Helena enjoys reading, watching movies, bush walking and practising yoga.
